ASTM A519 specification covers for several grades of carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing, either hot-finished or cold-finished. The steel used in the mechanical tubing may be cast in ingots or may be strand cast. When steel of different grades is sequentially strand cast, identification of the resultant transition material is required. The seamless tubing is a tubular product made without a welded seam. It is usually manufactured by hot working steel, and if necessary, by subsequently cold finishing the hot-worked tubular product to produce the desired shape, dimensions and properties. The tubes shall be furnished in the following shapes: round, square, rectangular and special sections. Heat analysis shall be made to determine the percentages of the elements specified. If secondary melting processes are used, the heat analysis shall be obtained from one remelted ingot or the product of one remelted ingot of each primary melt. The tubing shall be coated with a film of oil before shaping to retard rust when specified. Seamless mechanical tubing is manufactured from carbon and alloy steels for structural or other mechanical purposes involving machining or heat treating, where close tolerances, smooth finish, or definite physical properties are important factors.
Scope
1.1 this specification covers several frades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing. The frades anr listed in Tables 1, 2, and 3. When welding is used for joining the weldable mechanical tube grades, the welding procedure shall be suitable for the frade, the condition of the components, and the intended service.
1.2 This specification covers both seamless hot-finished emchanical tubing and seamless cold-finished mechanical tubing in sizes up to and including 12 3/4 in.(322.8mm) outside diameter of rround tubes with wall thicknesses as required.
1.3 The tubes shall be furnished in the following shapes, as specified by the purchaser:round, square, rectagular, and special sections.
1.4 Supplementary requirements of an optional nature are provided and when desired shall be so stated in the order.
1.5 The values stated in inch-pround units are to be regarded as the standard.

ASTM A513 Mechanical Pipe VS ASTM A519 Mechanical pipe
ASTM A513 standard for carbon mechanical piping and electrical resistance welding alloy (ERW). It covers carbon steel grades split into 1008 and above in addition to specified alloy steels and can be classifiedA513 Type1A (hot rolled), Type 1B (preserved in vinegar and greased), Type 2 (cold rolled) and Type 5 (drawn on mandrel).
ASTM A513 Type 1
ASTM A513 Type 1A mechanical pipe is produced from hot rolled steel and A513 Type 1B pipe is produced in hot rolled steel strip that has been preserved in vinegar to descale after greased to provide a clean hot rolled surface.
A513 Type 1 pipe provides more specific tolerances for OD, wall thickness, length and straightness pipe tolerances and structural pipe specifications. It is often used in applications where bending, burning or flattening is required.
ASTM A513 Type 2
ASTM A513 Type 2 is produced in hot rolled steel strip which has been cold reduced. Due to the extra cold work in steel mills, A513 type 2 pipe will have stricter tolerances of wall thickness, improved surface condition and a narrower range of type 1 mechanical properties.
A513 Type 2 mechanical reg tube is used in environments where aesthetically attractive and lightweight surfaces are required. Examples include display shelves, furniture, greenhouses, exercise equipment, and many others. The maximum wall thicknesses of cold rolled pipe is 0.120″ nominal.
ASTM A513 Type 5
ASTM A513 tube type 5 is a mandrel drawn pipe product (DOM) that has closer OD/ID/wall tolerances of reg products. Produced from 1020 and 1026 steel. It is commonly used in the automotive, appliance and construction industries.
