For demanding pipe and ducting applications that encounter high pressures, high temperatures, and/or harsh chemicals, metal expansion joints are the safest and most dependable solution.
High pressure, high temperature media and harsh and/or corrosive chemicals demand safe, reliable, and leak-free joints between pipe or duct sections. But, because no piping or ductwork system is perfectly designed, and because movement and vibration can’t be avoided in most (if not all) applications, you need a way to accommodate for these factors without damaging your system.
That’s where our metal expansion joints come in. While they don’t offer as much flexibility as rubber or elastomer expansion joints, metal expansion joints are better suited to challenging applications and hazardous media.
Please keep these questions in mind when specifying the metal expansion joints you need:
Universal expansion joint consists of two bellows connected with intermediate pipe. This expansion joint installed in exhaust systems absorbs axial and lateral heat expansions, vibrations and pressure movements. Universal expansion joints are unrestrained and they have applications in low pressure systems.
Universal expansion joint with flanges
Universal expansion joint with pipe ends
Universal expansion joints consist of two bellows with a central piece of pipe – this can be supplied with flanges or pipe ends. These joints are designed to absorb a greater amount of axial and lateral movements compared to a single expansion joint. The longer the central pipe length increases the greater the bellows can absorb lateral deflection.
The universal expansion joint can absorb not only axial movements but angular and lateral movements as well. It consists of two metal bellows with an intermediate pipe and connectors on both sides.
As a special form of the axial expansion joint, the universal expansion joint has only a limited pressure resistance for stability reasons and, moreover, loads the adjacent pipe supports with the axial compressive force resulting from the internal pressure.
The universal metal expansion joints are usually used to compensate large axial and lateral movements at low pressure.
A universal expansion joint is composed of two bellows connected by a common pipe or centerspool. This type of assembly allows any combination of the three basic movements: axial, lateral and angular. A universal expansion joint is generally used In cases with more lateral movement than can be absorbed by a single axial expansion joint, or when there is a limitation on the amount ot lateral forces allowed by the connecting pipe system. The lateral movement capability of e universal expansion joint depends on the centorspoollength. When using a universal expansion joint, anchors must be sufllclently designed to withstand the full thrust forces .
Tied Universal Expansion Joints
Typically, ln higher pressure applications there is a limit of the forces that the connecting pipe system can accommodate. tn these cases a tied universal expansion joint may be used. r~e rods restrain pressure thrust forces while allowing a large amount of lateral movement. The amount of lateral movement absorbed es with a universal expansion joint without tie rods depends on the centerspool length. The tie rods do not allow the expansion joint to absorb any axial extension external to the tied length. Ills Important that the piping configuration does not allow the tied universal expansion folnl to be compressed. This would relieve the tie rod tension, therefore, allowing pressure thrust forces to act on the piping system.
Tied universal expansion joints are frequently used to absorb lateral deflection in a “Z” bend configuration. The expansion joint absorbs the thermal movement ol horizontal pipelines as lateral defleclion. This can be accomplished in a single plane or three plane configuration. In a three plane “Z ” bend the horizontal pipes may lie at any angle in the horizontal plane since the tied universal expansion joint can absorb lateral deflection in any direction.
