Offshore Steels
Predominantly, offshore structures are built specifically for drilling oil and gas deposits deep under the sea bed. Whilst applications will vary, all will have exposure to the effects of salt water corrosion, powerful sea currents often dictated by the tides and strong winds. Our search for natural fuel resources has stretched into even more inaccessible areas such as the Arctic which has also resulted in rigs drilling at much greater depths and hence lower temperatures.
Structures in harsh working environments like these require a specific range of steels to promote greater safety, longer working life and reduce the risk of failure which in certain cases could prove disastrous.
Offshore Steel Characteristics:
- High yield strength
- Excellent weldability
- Good internal soundness
- Good resistance to brittle fracture (longitudinal and transverse)
- Low phosphorus and sulphur contents
- High resistance to lamellar tearing

API 2H Grade 50
API 2H Grade 50 is an offshore steel grade which is regulated by the American Bureau of Shipbuilding (ABS).
Whilst originally designed as a structural steel for use in the welded construction of offshore platforms, the material is also used in other applications due to the tight controls placed on the chemical composition of the steel at the mill stage.
The primary use of API 2H Grade 50 is in critical areas of the construction where good impact and fatigue resistance is required. API 2H Grade 50 can be found in stiffened plate construction, tubular joints, and other intersections where parts of the plates are subjected to through-thickness tension.
The steel is also used as a piling material for bridge construction due to its fracture, vibration and torque resistance. API 2H Grade 50 is therefore not only in effective material for floating and rigid offshore platform construction, it also has other uses as a high yield and highly specified structural grade material.
Key Features:
- Structural offshore grade for critical applications
- High yield with excellent fracture and impact resistance
- Resistance to lamellar tearing
- Though classed as a marine grade, can be used in a variety of applications due to stringent spec
API 2W Grade 50
Thermo-mechanically rolled for extra strength and toughness, API 2W Grade 50 is a structural offshore steel grade which is regulated by the American Bureau of Shipbuilding (ABS).
The material is used in the production of floating and rigid offshore oil and gas platforms and is used commonly in intersections of the structure due to the materials superior strength combined with good impact and fatigue resistance.
API 2W Grade 50 provides good toughness around the heat affected zone (HAZ) so is an ideal material for use in the welded joints of the construction.
The stringent chemical composition of the material makes API 2W Grade 50 an excellent structural steel where resistance to fracture, vibration or torque is required (as found in bridge construction).
The steel has arguably better welding characteristics than API 2H Grade 50 due to the materials lower carbon content.
Key Features:
- Structural offshore grade for critical applications
- Lower carbon content for improved weldability
- Thermo-mechanically rolled for extra strength and toughness
- Good impact resistance in heat affected zone (HAZ)
- Resistance to lamellar tearing
Shipbuilding Steels
Our hot rolled shipbuilding steel is produced in accordance with the relevant Classification Society, examples of which include Lloyds Register and Det Norske Veritas.
Our steel products include steel shipbuilding plate, fabricated steel sections and floor plate for decking. We can also supply bulb flats for plate stiffening, structural steel angles and inverted angles.
Our plates are supplied under the ASTM/ASME specification (ASTM A131 / ASME SA 131) which is the standard specification for Structural Steel for Ships.
We offer higher strength shipbuilding steels as standard .High strength steels offer significant cost advantages by reducing the weight of the structure in comparison to the steel used. The plates are suitable for use in the construction of container ships and large cargo freighters as well as commercial shipping lines such as luxury cruise ships and ferries.
Supply options include heavy plates, surface treated plates and pre-fabricated sections. In most cases, the steel can also be supplied as hot rolled coils or cut into lengths (sheets).
These high yield materials are commonly used in the construction of hulls and superstructures for large shipping vessels. The grades are exclusively for shipbuilding use as set out in the standard.
