Basalt is basically a volcanic rock that possesses perfect characteristics including resistance to abrasion as well as corrosion. For over 20 years, Sunny Steel has offered a comprehensive range of abrasion- and corrosion-resistant lining products to combat erosion in bulk materials-handling in heavy industry. Ceramic-based materials such as Basalt, Alumina are the most well-known lining materials used. Cast Basalt is formed from Volcanic rock that is crushed, cast, and annealed in a specialised process. This results in two exceptional qualities. Firstly, being many times higher in resistance to erosion than iron or steel and, secondly, it has a high degree of chemical resistance.
The process of basalt casting starts with discerning quarrying of the rock. It is then melted at 1280°C and then casted in the form of moulds and cylinders. The basalt castings that are produced are then exposed to a cycle of heat treatment. They are placed in kilns for the production of basalt in a re-crystallized form. The product contains various cast basalt properties like inertness in it. This inertness is inherited from the parent material. It is homogenous, non porous and denser as compared to the raw form. Amazing qualities of abrasion resistance are acquired by the processed form of basalt after going through the process of basalt casting.
Basalt casts are considered the best lining materials for industries dealing with abrasion resistance. The other application areas of basalt casts are bends, lining pipers and trenches.
It can be cast in a variety of shapes using sand moulds or spun into 500-mm-long cylindrical liners. Certain diameters are now available at 1000 mm. Spun liners are available in diameters between 100 mm and 660 mm, with engineered tile sets available for sizes above 660mm. When first installed, cast Basalt has a coefficient of friction similar to that of steel, and a density of around 3000 kg/m3. Over time the conveyed media effectively polishes the surface of the Basalt lining, improving the coefficient of friction as the linings are used.
Cast Basalt can be used for the lining of pipework, chutes, bunkers, cyclones, and hoppers. It has become the global standard in areas such as ash slurry pipework, often used at fossil-fuel power stations. It is an all-round cost-effective and adaptable lining material that extends the life of equipment in the pipe or tile form were affected by abrasion.
Cast Basalt is well-proven in a variety of industries as a cost-effective, long-lasting lining material used to extend the operating life of equipment manufactured or lined with lower-wearing materials such as steel, cast iron, rubber, and polyurethane.

Chemical Resistance – Cast Basalt is almost absolutely acid/alkali resistant (except Hydrofluoric Acid) and hence corrosion resistant.
Temparature – Cast Basalt withstands temperature up to 450 C.
Life – Life of basalt-lined pipe is estimated to be 7 to 10 times that Cast Iron, and 3 to 4 times that of Ni-hard Steel.
Cast basalt is a durable, resistant, and reliable and widely used manufacturing material being used in variant construction projects and industries. The linings made from cast basalt are strong and have long lasting effects. This is why most of the industries prefer using cast basalt linings in most of their manufacturing operations.
