ASTM steel plate accord to the grades are those that meet the exacting standards for specific grades of steel developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
The standards include mechanical properties and steel chemistries and specify the testing methods to be used. For some grades, steelmaking and heat treatment are also specified. You can be confident that these ASTM steel plates will meet your customer’s expectations.
The Tensile Strength and Elongation of the ASTM Steel Plates are plotted on the graph. The grades are discussed in detail to the right.

Two grades (C and D) for structural and general uses. ASTM A283 is a carbon steel for forming. It has a slightly higher ductility and a slightly lower strength than A36.
ASTM A36 Steel Plate is one of the most common grades of steel used in structural applications. This mild carbon steel grade contains chemical alloys that give it properties such as machinability, ductility, and strength that are ideal for use in constructing a variety of structures.
ASTM A36 steel is a common grade of low carbon steel with good strength and good formability. It is easy to machine, form, drill, machine, punch, and shear.
ASTM A36 steel plate has many uses including ships, buildings, and bridges.
It is used in riveted, bolted, and welded construction of bridges and buildings, including prefabricated buildings, warehouses, and commercial structures.
A36 is the standard specification for structural steel. Very high volume grade. Wide chemistry range, but requires a 36 ksi minimum yield strength.
ASTM A572 steel plate is a popular grade of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel that is typically used in structural applications. A572 steel contains chemical alloys that enhance the material’s hardness and ability to bear weight, and this material is lightweight relative to steel grades with similar compositions.
ASTM A572 steel plate is made of ASTM AA572, a High-Strength Low-Alloy, Columbium-Vanadium Structural Steel.
There are five grades of high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, sheet piling, and bars.
A572 grade 42 steel plate and 50 [345], and 55 [380] are best for riveted, bolted, or welded structures.
A572 Grade 60 steel plate 65 [450] is best for riveted or bolted construction of bridges, or for riveted, bolted, or welded construction in other uses.
A572 is the standard specification for high-strength low alloy columbium-vanadium structural steel. Lists five chemical recipes and five different mechanical property ranges for plate products (grades 42, 50, 55, 60, and 65). Relatively wide chemical and property ranges. Grade 50 high volume.
ASTM A514 steel plate, also known as T-1 steel plate, is a popular grade of quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel that offers high strength, weldability and machinability. Due to these properties, A514 is typically used in applications where wear resistance and the ability to withstand high impact are important.
Structural and Pressure Vessel Quality Plate available in eight grades:
These grades have increased strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and impact-abrasion resistance.
A514 is the standard specification for high-yield-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate. It is suitable for welding. Lists allowable chemical analyses for a family of plate products of 100 ksi yield strength. Available at greater thicknesses than A656 grade 100. Does not allow plate from coil.
ASTM A516 is a PVQ carbon steel plate intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels at moderate or lower temperatures, where notch toughness is important. ASTM A516 IS recommended for Carbon steel plates for pressure vessels at moderate and lower temperature service. Meant mainly for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required. Steel Warehouse supplies ASTM A516 grade 55, 60, 65, & 70 steel. We will be glad to help you select the exact grade for your needs.
ASTM A517 steel plate is a high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate meant for use in fusion welded boilers and other pressure vessels. ASTM A517 steel plate is a high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate meant for use in fusion welded boilers and other pressure vessels. Steel Warehouse supplies ASTM A517 Grade A, B, H, S, F, E, & Q for your application.
ASTM A588 is high-strength low-alloy structural steel, up to 50 ksi [345 MPa] minimum yield point, with atmospheric corrosion resistance for welded, riveted, or bolted construction. ASTM A588 steel plate is primarily meant for use in welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important. We will be glad to help you select the exact grade for your needs. The ASTM A588 specification is the Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel , up to 50 ksi Minimum Yield Point, with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance for applications where strength and durability are needed.
ASTM A656 is a Hot-Rolled Structural Steel, High-Strength Low-Alloy Plate with Improved Formability. There are three types and five strength grades of high-strength low-alloy, hot rolled structural steel plate for use in truck frames, rackets, crane booms, rail cars, and similar uses – ASTM A656 Grade 50, 60, 70, 80, & 100 steel. These steels have improved formability. They are normally furnished in the as-rolled. We will be glad to help you select the exact grade for your needs.
A656 is the standard specification for hot-rolled structural steel, high-strength low alloy plate with improved formability. Lists two possible chemical variations for steels (grades 50, 60, 70, 80, and 100). Grades 80 and 100 are the highest volumes. More demanding property and chemistry requirements than A572.
The ASTM A709 is the Standard Specification for Structural Steel for Bridges and encompasses carbon, high-strength low-alloy, and quenched and tempered alloy steels used as structural plates in the construction of bridges.
ASTM A709 is a carbon and high-strength low-alloy steel structural shape, and plate. It is quenched and tempered alloy steel, for structural plates meant for use in bridges. We will be glad to help you select the exact grade of ASTM A709 steel plate for your needs.
A709 is the standard specification for structural steel bridges. Covers carbon, HSLA, Q&T, and stainless steel plates, bars, and shapes for structural use in bridges. Includes grades 36, 50, 70, and 100, with designations for enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance (W). Both fracture critical tension components and non-critical fracture tension components must meet impact requirements. These requirements are based on American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) requirements for tension components in bridges.
