Types of stainless steel

This crystal structure makes such steels non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. For higher hardness and strength, carbon is added. When subjected to adequate heat treatment these steels are used as razor blades, cutlery, tools etc.

What is stainless steel?

Significant quantities of manganese have been used in many stainless steel compositions. Manganese preserves an austenitic structure in the steel as does nickel, but at a lower cost.

The term “stainless steel” is a bit of a misnomer. There’s no one combination of iron and alloying elements that makes stainless steel what it is. Instead, stainless steel refers to the fact that products made from it do not rust.

Stainless steels generally contain between 10-20% chromium as the main alloying element and are valued for high corrosion resistance. Other alloys in stainless steels can include manganese, silicon, nickel and molybdenum. These alloys work together to interact with oxygen in water and air to quickly form a thin but strong film over the steel that prevents further corrosion.

Naturally, stainless steel pipe is used in any industry where corrosion protection is necessary. While stainless steel pipe is essentially alloy pipe by another name, it is not well suited for extreme service unless it’s been appropriately heat treated to increase strength and impact resistance.

Due to its aesthetic appeal, stainless steel is often chosen if pipe must be visible in public or professional settings.

There are four major types of stainless steel:

Austenitic is the most widely used type. It has a nickel content of at least 7%, which makes it very flexible. It is used in a range of houseware products, industrial piping and vessels, constructional structures and architectural facades. This is not hardenable by heat treating.

Ferritic stainless steel has similar properties to mild steel, but better corrosion resistance. This type of steel is commonly used in washing machines, boilers and indoor architecture.

Martensitic stainless steel is a very hard, strong steel. It contains around 13% chromium and is used to make

knives and turbine blades. Duplex is both a austenitic and ferritic and primarily used in chemical plants and piping applications. They usually contain approx. 22-25% chrome and 5% nickel with moly and nitrogen. They have higher yield strength and greater stress corrosion cracking resistance to chloride than austenitic.

Precipitation Hardening stainless steels are chrome-nickel stainlesses which contain alloying additions such as aluminum, copper or titanium that allow them to be hardened by a solution and aging heat treatment. They can be either austenitic or martensitic in the ages condition.

The application of stainless steel in automobiles!

As we all knowStainless steel materialhas excellent properties, it has an indispensable position in automobile manufacturing: it can be used in the following places:

1. Stainless steel for exhaust system: The exhaust system needs good heat resistance and corrosion resistance. Ferritic stainless steel is mainly used due to its low cost, good oxidation resistance and thermal fatigue characteristics. 409L, 436L and other commonly used stainless steel grades.

2. Stainless steel for fuel tank: In addition to no danger of fuel leakage, stainless steel fuel tank also has excellent corrosion resistance and good formability, can save or simplify the painting process, and is easy to recycle.

3. Stainless steel for the frame: The combination of the combined design of the automobile frame and the excellent performance of stainless steel materials can produce vehicles with particularly light weight, good impact resistance, high safety and reliability, and long service life.

4.Stainless steel automotive parts: mainly stainless steel sealing rings, heat exchangers and fasteners.

5. Stainless steel for decoration: Stainless steel inserts, antennas, wheel covers, etc. are used in small cars, and stainless steel is also used in handrails, safety railings and hanging bars of cars and large passenger vehicles. The seat belt tensioner is made of SUS301 stainless steel, the sensor and airbag lift pump are mainly made of SUS304 and SUS304L stainless steel, and the ABS induction ring is made of SUS434, SUS444 and other steels.

In the automobile manufacturing industry, stainless steel materials are relatively light in weight due to their high strength. Especially after being impacted, they absorb more energy than other metal materials, have better safety performance, and are lighter in weight and longer in service life than ordinary carbon steel vehicles. , the advantages of simple manufacturing and assembly process, etc., make the use of stainless steel in the automobile manufacturing industry grow rapidly and have a large potential market.
